Buy home, back home

We're building Homevest to help anyone buy property in their home country, across borders.

Working far from your home country should not hold you back from buying a home.

Be it in your home country or the new one, you should know what your options to buy a house are, how to finance it and how to turn your cross-border life to your advantage as opposed to being a limitation.

The Company

Back home to family

After seven years in London, Erik was moving to Sweden with his family. His dream was to buy a house in Sweden and move into their new home straight away.

Things didn’t work out that way. He called every bank in Sweden to get a mortgage, but they all turned him down. The local banks didn't want to lend to someone with a UK salary.

He wanted to help other expats become homeowners and avoid the hassle of moving. That’s when he started talking to Petru about how they could fix this.

Before founding Homevest, Erik worked at Wise as Product Manager and Generation Home as Head of Product.

“Wise taught me the power of expat communities. Generation Home showed me that there is a lot of untapped potential in improving access to Home ownership.”

Erik is from Finland and now lives with his wife and two kids in Stockholm. They are still renting, but hoping to buy something soon.

Invest in the future

Petru is originally from Romania, and now living in London. He wanted to buy a house as an investment back home. Buying in London is very expensive. The Romanian property market is good value in comparison.

“The house prices here are through the roof, especially in London. I want to have a place back home I can return to once my kids have grown up.”

When Petru started speaking to banks and brokers in Romania, he realised that the homebuying process for expats is very complicated.

Reaching out to banks, providing translations, legalisation, notarisation, mailing back and forth, and having to travel to Romania several times meant that the process turned into a full-time job.

Before starting Homevest, Petru worked at Generation Home as Head of Engineering and prior to that as an Engineering Manager for the API platform at Wise (formerly known as TransferWise).
